Disaster Recovery

Protecting your Critical data - Backup or no backup?

Whilst data protection has been around for a long time in the corporate environment, it still seems not to be as prominent as it should be. After all, how many of us are really prepared for a natural disaster, a terrorist or Cyber attack, and is our disaster recovery plan as robust as we think it is?

New regulations like the Sarbanes-Oxley Act are at now forcing organizations of all sizes to address their data backup issues, and the complexities that come with adhering to it.

A data protection survey commissioned in 2003 by Imation Corporation, a global leader in data storage, suggests that more than 1 in 3 IT managers of some of the world’s largest companies have ramped up their attention to data backup and disaster recovery in light of 9/11. Even if those organisations already had a plan in place, there is renewed interest in refining that plan to make it more powerful, sophisticated and reliable.

In a recent SME (small-medium enterprises) study by Dell, it uncovered a perception that disaster recovery plans are too expensive and are only available to large enterprises. The research also revealed that the main IT concerns amongst small to mid-sized enterprises, surprisingly are Data Security (64%) and their disaster recovery plans (54%). It is strange then that 73% of SMEs still say that productivity is the main reason for investment rather than the disaster recovery issues they are most concerned about.

SMEs generally seem unwilling to allocate sufficient budget for disaster recovery, preferring to take the more short-term benefits of IT investment. However, it is more critical than ever that SMEs address the issue of data protection and disaster recovery as a whole. Loosing vital information such as accounts payable, accounts receivable or inventory management can be a devastating blow to any company.

The good news is that implementing a disaster recovery plan does not have to be expensive.
Ask some important questions:

  • How prepared am I for a disaster?
  • How much is my business at risk if my data is lost forever?
  • Do I backup my data, and if so, how often?
  • What information is most critical to my business?
  • Do I have a plan for data recovery and protection?

Taking steps to ensure that your data is protected is not just important – it is essential.
